On August 21 the Long Island Rebels 10U team participated in the American Littoral Society 2021 NYS Beach Cleanup. Before the team set out on their task Coach Vinny Mannetta gave an inspiring speech about what it means to be a team and the importance of being good citizens on and off the ice. He then unveiled the team's mantra for the 2021/22 season "May We All", which is derived from the song of the same name from the band Florida Georgia Line. After a trying 2020 with little hockey and much despair, Vinny was listening to the radio and happened upon this song. What a perfect message for our team! It reminds us all that we need to enjoy the simple pleasures in life, the innocence of childhood and a hope that all people get to experience the fullness of life. Vinny and his Assistant Coach Mike Cartwright then lead the team to the beach where the cleanup began.
The team did a fantastic job removing 43.5 lbs of trash from our beautiful LI beaches. They found many cans, bottles, bottle caps, straws, styrofoam, plastic cups and even a shoe. Not only did the team collect the trash but they meticulously documented each item they collected as the Littoral Society accumulates that information and uses it to better understand what pollutants are in our oceans. The team learned a great lesson about environmental responsibility and felt great about themselves and the work they had done.
